National fuel depot, Conakry — bulk fuel depot explosion
18 December 2023
Kaloum, Conakry, Guinea
What happened
An explosion tore through Guinea's principal fuel depot — the country's only oil terminal — in the Kaloum district of Conakry shortly after midnight, reportedly while a ship was offloading, blowing out windows in nearby homes. Initial reporting recorded 11 dead and more than 80 injured; the toll rose over following days to 23 dead and 241 injured, and a later disaster study documented 25 deaths and 459 injured after fuller case collection. Fuel shortages and clashes followed as the country's main import terminal was knocked out. This is a bulk national fuel-depot disaster, not an attack.
