Eni Calenzano fuel depot — loading-area explosion

9 December 2024

Calenzano, Italy

What happened

A powerful explosion struck the road-tanker loading area of an Eni fuel-storage and distribution depot north of Florence while maintenance work on pipelines was reportedly being carried out alongside tanker loading — a practice that should not have been allowed. The main tank farm was not reached, but five people were killed, two critically injured, and about twenty others suffered minor injuries; nearby buildings collapsed and regional rail services were briefly disrupted. Nine people, including Eni executives, were later indicted.
