Griffin field flowline — decommissioning release

8 May 2025 · Approximately 18:00 local time

Offshore Exmouth, Western Australia

What happened

During flushing of a disconnected 2.8 km subsea flowline in the decommissioned Griffin field, observers saw a black substance discharge from the outlet and a light sheen form at the surface. The unexpected fluid may have included produced water, residual hydrocarbons, degraded production chemicals and scale. A tracking buoy was deployed. NOPSEMA's public report did not quantify the release, so no volume is inferred; the marker is approximate.
