What happened

At least nine electrical substations in Washington and Oregon were shot at, entered or vandalized during November and December 2022. The FBI separately offered rewards over shootings at BPA's Ostrander Substation near Oregon City and a substation in Tumwater. Four Pierce County substations were then attacked on Christmas Day, cutting electricity to about 14,000 customers and causing an estimated $3 million in damage. Two men later pleaded guilty to the Pierce County attacks; prosecutors said their motive was to create an outage so they could burglarize businesses. Authorities did not establish that the earlier Oregon and Washington incidents were connected to the Christmas attacks, so this aggregate marker records a regional wave rather than one coordinated political campaign.
