Fuel terminal, La Boca — tanker truck explosion

6 April 2026

La Boca, Balboa, Panama

What happened

A tanker truck exploded around 4:12pm while loading fuel at a private terminal beneath the Bridge of the Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, with fire spreading to two other tankers at the site. A terminal worker was trapped between vehicles and died at the scene; two firefighters suffered minor burns. The Panama Canal Authority said the explosion had no impact on canal operations. This was an accidental fuel-transport incident, not an attack.
