What happened

A leak-detection alarm on Harvest Alaska's 22-mile Point Thomson export pipeline indicated a release late on 13 January. The operator immediately shut in and depressurised the line, and an aircraft visually confirmed the leak the following day about 35 miles east of Prudhoe Bay and one mile southeast of the Badami Pad. The released natural-gas condensate—a light liquid hydrocarbon similar to kerosene or diesel—contaminated snow and localized tundra vegetation. An early calculation placed the maximum possible release at 11,550 gallons, while Alaska's later annual response report estimated approximately 4,032 gallons, or 96 barrels, were released. A unified command removed contaminated snow for treatment in Deadhorse, thermally treated localized oiled vegetation and installed a repair clamp on 28 January. No injuries or oiled animals were reported. The reviewed final situation report said the cause remained under investigation.
