What happened

A furnace associated with the vacuum-distillation section at Abadan refinery exploded and partially collapsed on 24 September, injuring three workers. Khuzestan and refinery officials described the cause as a technical fault and said the situation was brought under control. Refinery management said the furnace had long been out of normal service and was used only as an emergency preheater; the atmospheric-distillation units and the refinery's main production train remained online. Reports describing an 80,000-barrel refining-capacity loss or a complete shutdown conflict with those detailed operating statements and are not adopted here. Management separately reported a temporary decline in gasoline output while conversion units stabilised, with recovery expected the following day. This is distinct from the separately recorded July 2025 Unit 70 pump fire at the same refinery.
