Refinery-to-Auckland pipeline rupture, Ruakākā

What happened

The buried pipeline carrying petrol, diesel and jet fuel from Marsden Point refinery toward Auckland ruptured in a paddock in Ruakākā. The rupture was traced to damage from a digger searching for swamp kauri logs on the property roughly three years earlier, in August 2014. About 124 m³ of jet fuel escaped, of which more than 115 m³ was recovered; contamination was reported effectively contained. The pipeline was unavailable for ten days, forcing airlines to limit jet fuel to 30% of usual usage and causing more than 100 flight cancellations at Auckland Airport.
