What happened

A viable improvised explosive device was found attached to a fuel tank serving the sports and social club building associated with the Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina refinery. The Irish Defence Forces' explosive-ordnance team rendered it safe during a six-hour operation, while a 350-metre cordon restricted staff movements. The device did not detonate and no plant damage or injuries were reported. Gardaí examined several possible motives, but the reviewed evidence did not establish a Ukraine-war connection or responsibility. A man arrested during the wider cross-border IED investigation was released without charge, and the investigation remained open.
