Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery — storage-tank fire

10 July 2023

Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan Province, Iran

What happened

Unsafe operation of a crude-oil transport truck during a period of heavy traffic sparked a fire that spread to storage tanks at Iran's second-largest refinery (over 300,000 bbl/d capacity), causing two of five neighboring tanks to explode; eight firefighters suffered minor injuries and the blaze was extinguished within about three hours with no other casualties reported. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack. (Note: an earlier, less-documented claim of a June 2022 Bandar Abbas fire could not be independently verified; this entry reflects the well-sourced July 2023 event.)
