What happened

A fire began in the southern battery-storage area of Beijing Fuweisi Oil and Gas Technology's integrated solar-storage-charging project at the Jimei Home Furnishings Dahongmen site. During the emergency response, an explosion in the northern storage building killed two firefighters and injured another; a plant employee initially listed as missing was later confirmed dead, bringing the final toll to three. The completed project included 25 MWh of lithium-iron-phosphate battery storage, rooftop photovoltaic generation and electric-vehicle fast charging. Beijing's investigation traced the initiating fire to an internal short circuit in an LFP battery that triggered thermal runaway and propagation. Combustible gases migrated through inadequately sealed cable trenches toward the northern building, where they accumulated and exploded after firefighters entered the area. Investigators classified the event as a production-safety responsibility accident, found the project had been built before completing required filing, and identified design, construction, monitoring and emergency-management failures. The incident became an important battery-storage fire-safety case because it demonstrated that LFP chemistry can still generate explosive gas mixtures during sustained thermal runaway.
