What happened

An engineering fault at the Guddu Thermal Power Station in southern Sindh province triggered a frequency-variation system trip at 11:41pm local time on 9 January 2021, cascading into shutdowns at power plants across Pakistan's national grid. Between roughly 80% and 90% of the country's electricity supply was suspended, plunging the capital Islamabad and major cities including Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar into darkness; airport operations were disrupted and hospitals switched to backup generators. Federal Power Minister Omar Ayub attributed the incident to an engineering fault at Guddu rather than an external attack. Pakistan's National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) subsequently investigated the incident and fined the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) approximately 50 million Pakistani rupees for failing to ensure timely restoration of electricity supply. This is an accidental technical grid failure, not an attack, and is distinct from Pakistan's separate, later nationwide blackout in 2023 recorded elsewhere if applicable.
