Bow Jubail — Rotterdam jetty collision and bunker spill

23 June 2018

Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands

What happened

The product tanker Bow Jubail struck a jetty while berthing in ballast at the Port of Rotterdam and spilled about 217 tonnes of bunker heavy fuel oil. Oil contaminated quays, jetties, revetments, fenders and more than 100 ocean-going vessels and inland barges; a smaller amount escaped the port and reached Nieuwe Maas riverbanks. Responders skimmed oil, established vessel-cleaning stations and captured roughly 500 oiled swans for rehabilitation.
