What happened

A 15 MVA transformer at Bahamas Power and Light's Blue Hills Power Station caught fire and exploded at about 1:45am, which BPL said was triggered by a suspected underground cable fault, shutting down generation at the Blue Hills and Clifton Pier stations and causing a complete loss of power across New Providence. Electricity had been restored to roughly 50% of consumers by 7:18am, with restoration taking seven hours or longer in some communities, followed by temporary rotational outages. Lynden Pindling International Airport ran on generator power for several hours and check-in queues formed after an internet interruption; Princess Margaret Hospital reported little disruption to patient care.
