What happened
Kinder Morgan's monitoring system detected a pressure drop on the 22-inch Colorado Interstate Gas Line 05A west of Cheyenne. The pipeline ruptured beside Union Pacific tracks, and the released natural gas ignited and exploded as a 227-car freight train passed. The train stopped without derailing; two ethanol-carrying railcars vented through pressure-relief devices after exposure to the fire. Kinder Morgan isolated the affected segment. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The NTSB investigation remains open, so no failure cause is assigned.
