What happened

Two submarine telecommunications cables owned by Elisa and Arelion and running between Finland and Estonia were damaged in Estonia's exclusive economic zone, with part of the damage also in Finnish territorial waters. Suspicion fell on the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged cargo ship Fitburg; the Finnish Border Guard identified the vessel in connection with the incident, prevented further damage and directed it to an anchorage before authorities took possession of it for investigation. Finland's National Bureau of Investigation completed its inquiry in June 2026 with four suspects and referred the case to prosecutors for consideration of charges including aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with telecommunications.
