What happened

Sun reports a fire at a harbour petrol shed in Shaviyani Funadhoo that spread to neighboring homes and workshops. Its later account, citing the hospital, says 20 people were treated and discharged: eight for minor burns, two for smoke inhalation and ten for panic attacks or other minor injuries. This later count supersedes early reports of 16 or 18 patients rather than adding to them. Sun separately quotes MNDF saying the fire was extinguished. Nearby residents were evacuated and school and hospital outpatient services were disrupted. A later Sun report, citing the hospital, relays advice to avoid collecting or using rainwater because of possible smoke and oil-particle contamination; this is a precautionary warning, not a laboratory-confirmed water-contamination finding. The same report attributes to NDMA the temporary relocation of 33 people. The ignition cause, fuel volume lost and wider fuel-supply effect are not established. The marker references the island, not a surveyed petrol-shed location. Updated on 25 October 2026, 20:13 UTC+0.
