Keystone pipeline, Fort Ransom — crude oil release

What happened

A pipeline employee heard a bang and saw oil coming from the 30-inch Keystone pipeline south of a pump station near Fort Ransom, North Dakota; the line was shut within about two minutes. South Bow estimated about 3,500 barrels (147,000 gallons) spilled into a farm field, most of which was recovered. PHMSA issued a corrective action order with pressure restrictions on 11 April; the pipeline restarted on 16 April after regulatory approval. The cause was undetermined in the reporting reviewed. This was an accidental pipeline failure, not an attack.
