Pipeline
Ku-Maloob-Zaap submarine pipeline, Campeche Sound — "Eye of Fire"
2 July 2021
Campeche Sound, Gulf of Mexico, Mexico
What happened
A submarine gas pipeline near Pemex's Ku-C satellite platform, part of the Ku-Maloob-Zaap offshore complex (about 40% of Pemex's total output), ruptured around 5:15am and ignited on the sea surface, producing a viral "eye of fire" visible from the platform. Crews used water pumps, hoses and nitrogen to extinguish the blaze within about five hours; normal operating conditions resumed by 10:45am with no injuries or evacuations reported. This was an accidental offshore pipeline failure, not an attack.
