What happened

A 2,500-cubic-metre pyrolysis-gasoline tank exploded and burned at SCG Chemicals affiliate Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal. One employee died, four people were injured and approximately 400 workers and residents were evacuated. The fire was contained after more than six hours and extinguished the following day. SCGC halted its Rayong Olefins and Map Ta Phut Olefins crackers and declared force majeure; those plants supply ethylene and propylene to several regional polymer producers. The operator opened an investigation, and no final cause is asserted here.
