What happened
A man scaled the fenced perimeter of an Enbridge/East Tennessee Natural Gas substation in Maryville, opened numerous high-pressure gas valves and damaged monitoring, metering and regulating equipment, triggering an emergency gas release that prompted the evacuation of about 400 people and 19 businesses. He pleaded guilty to damaging an interstate gas pipeline facility and was sentenced in May 2026 to 10 months in federal prison plus restitution to Enbridge and Atmos Energy. No group affiliation was reported; this is treated as a deliberate physical intrusion/sabotage incident.
