What happened

Unknown attackers fired multiple rounds of high-powered rifle ammunition at two Duke Energy substations roughly ten miles apart in West End and Carthage, Moore County, damaging equipment at both sites and cutting power to about 45,000 customers. Restoration took nearly four days, with full service not restored until the following Wednesday evening. Local officials declared a state of emergency and an overnight curfew. One woman died after her home oxygen equipment lost power during the outage; investigators have not announced an arrest or established a motive, though officials have said extremist motives are among those being examined.
