What happened

A derecho and storms in the following days inflicted widespread physical damage across NIPSCO's northern Indiana network and interrupted service to approximately 375,000 customers, about 80% of the utility's electric customers. NIPSCO said more than 4,000 internal and contract workers from 14 states supported repairs. Restoration lasted far longer in some communities, including Gary, than in neighbouring service territories; NIPSCO reported the broader storm-restoration operation substantially complete on 26 August, while continuing to address a limited number of individual cases. This record is classified as a weather-related infrastructure failure. It is not evidence of sabotage or a coordinated attack, and the marker is a regional reference rather than a damaged-facility coordinate.
