Norilsk fuel-storage tank — Arctic diesel spill
29 May 2020
Norilsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia
What happened
A storage tank failed at a power and fuel facility in the Kayerkan area of Norilsk, releasing about 21,200 tonnes of diesel beyond containment into soil, the Bezymianny Stream and the Daldykan and Ambarnaya rivers. The emergency cleanup ran until November 2020, followed by continuing environmental monitoring and restoration. This was an industrial accident, not an attack.
