What happened

The IRGC navy claimed on 9 October that an LPG carrier it identified as NV Sunshine, owned by Natwit, was struck while attempting to use a route south of the Strait of Hormuz that Iran described as unauthorized. Anadolu and Türkiye Today relayed its claim of a major fire in the engine room and propulsion system. These reports establish the existence of the IRGC statement, not independent confirmation of the attack, vessel identity, ownership or damage. Crew casualties, pollution, cargo quantity, weapon and subsequent vessel status remain unverified. The route’s alleged illegality is Iran’s characterization, not an established legal finding. No match to an earlier unnamed UKMTO incident has been established; this claim must not be assumed to identify one of those vessels.

When cited sources give different casualty, damage or spill figures for this event, they’re reported side by side above rather than merged into one number. See how confidence levels work.
