What happened

A small tube connecting BP's Olympic Pipeline to a pressure-check valve failed near Conway, releasing approximately 21,168 gallons of gasoline into farmland, Hill Ditch and a salmon-bearing stream. Responders recovered about 8,324 gallons of gasoline and more than 332,000 gallons of oily water, treated nearly 1.1 million gallons of contaminated water and removed almost 12,000 cubic yards of soil. Downstream sampling found no harmful gasoline-related concentrations after 19 January 2024, and nearby residential wells showed no contamination. Washington regulators later fined BP $3.8 million over the spill.
