Port Adelaide fertiliser plant — sulphur shed fire

What happened

A large industrial shed storing sulphur at a fertiliser plant on Moonta Road, Port Adelaide, caught fire, producing large volumes of toxic sulphur-dioxide smoke. South Australia's Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) issued an emergency "Leave Immediately" warning covering roughly a 1 km radius around Moonta Road (bounded by the Port River, Port River Expressway, Hanson Road and Club Road) due to hazardous materials and toxic smoke. Two workers from the plant were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Phil Rogers said the fire was contained within the shed but was a smouldering sulphur fire that was very difficult to extinguish and produced little flame but heavy toxic smoke. No attack or foul play was reported; this is treated as an industrial accident. The marker is approximate to Moonta Road pending an exact street number.
