MT Princess Empress, Oriental Mindoro — industrial-fuel-oil spill

28 February 2023

Off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

What happened

The product tanker MT Princess Empress sank off Oriental Mindoro while carrying roughly 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil. Escaping oil reached coastal communities and threatened marine protected areas across several Philippine regions; government agencies, the coast guard and communities deployed booms and shoreline cleanup. The cargo figure is not presented as the measured quantity released. This was a maritime casualty, not an attack.
