Unidentified oil tanker — reported mine explosion

26 July 2026 · Time not stated (GMT / UTC+0)

Strait of Hormuz; precise position not reported

What happened

Iranian media, including the IRGC-linked Tasnim news agency, reported that an unidentified oil tanker exploded after striking a naval mine when it deviated from a route designated by Iranian authorities in the Strait of Hormuz. Al Jazeera reported the claim from Tehran, and Reuters relayed Tasnim’s account. At the time reviewed, no vessel name, flag, owner, voyage, cargo, precise position, imagery, crew condition, pollution assessment, or independent maritime-security confirmation was available. The occurrence of an explosion and the asserted mine cause therefore remain unverified. The marker is approximate and does not indicate a confirmed mine location.
