What happened

A large fire and a series of explosions engulfed a fuel warehouse in the Tanjaro area near Sulaimaniyah, in Iraq's Kurdistan region, just before midnight, spreading to destroy 34 petrol tankers and 4 gas-oil tankers and consuming more than 3 million litres of fuel. Deputy Governor Shaho Osman said the fire had been brought under control, with civil defence teams from Sulaimaniyah leading the response and Erbil crews on standby. Reporting on casualties varied slightly: Al Jazeera cited at least 20 people with minor injuries, while Kurdish outlet ANHA/Hawar News put the figure at 18 injured; no deaths were reported. The cause of the fire was not established and remained under investigation, and the reviewed reporting did not indicate an attack. Local officials said they did not expect the incident to raise regional petrol prices.
