GFS Galaxy — IRGC attack in the Strait of Hormuz
11–12 July 2026 · 22:40 GMT (UTC+0)
Strait of Hormuz, approximately 9 NM east of Oman
What happened
UKMTO reported that a container ship sustained damage to the rear of the vessel and caught fire approximately 9 nautical miles east of Oman while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command separately identified the vessel as the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy and said it was attacked by Iran's IRGC, causing significant engine-room damage and a fire that left the vessel unable to continue its voyage. The 24-member crew abandoned ship in a lifeboat and were rescued; one crew member, an Indian marine engineer, was reported missing and was later confirmed dead. The US military carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran in the following days. No environmental impact was reported in the cited advisories.
