What happened

A widespread outage cut electricity to grid-connected communities across Yukon, including Whitehorse, Dawson City, Mayo, Teslin and other areas served by Yukon Energy and ATCO Electric Yukon. Yukon Energy's follow-up investigation found that a hydro turbine at the Aishihik facility tripped offline during a mechanical adjustment carried out as part of maintenance. The resulting system imbalance caused other generation sources to disconnect from the isolated Yukon grid. Diesel generators in Faro and Whitehorse supported restoration, and power was restored to all customers within about 80 minutes. The turbine was not damaged.
