Arzew LNG/petrochemical complex — major explosion and fire

1 July 2019

Arzew, Oran Province, Algeria

What happened

A fire broke out around 10pm at Sonatrach's Arzew LNG and petrochemical hub near Oran, described by trade press as the worst LNG-sector explosion in 60 years; Algeria halted production at the complex following the blasts and fire. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack. (Note: a separately reported 'Skikda LNG fire, 2019' claim could not be independently verified with a specific date — Skikda's major, well-documented LNG disaster occurred in 2004, outside this map's ten-year window — so this entry covers the verified Arzew event instead.)
