Mellitah oil and gas complex — protest occupation and shutdown

What happened

Protesters demonstrating against daily electricity cuts stormed the Mellitah oil and gas complex and closed gas lines feeding Libyan power stations. Libya's National Oil Corporation said the disruption completely halted production at the El Feel oilfield, partially suspended Wafa field operations, interrupted gas and fuel supplies and forced several electricity-generation units offline. The General Electricity Company warned that the disruption risked wider grid collapse. The Government of National Unity later secured the complex, after which gas pumping and operations at El Feel, Wafa and the Sabratha offshore platform resumed and electricity supply began to stabilise. The shutdown lasted less than a day; it is recorded as a deliberate protest disruption, not an attack on or physical destruction of the facility. The marker is placed at the coastal Mellitah complex, while the affected fields and generating units are geographically separate downstream assets.
