What happened

Australia experienced substantial but uneven fuel-supply interruptions during the March 2026 global oil shock. By 25 March, the federal government said about 470 service stations had run out of at least one fuel type. Six expected fuel cargoes had been cancelled or deferred, although replacement cargoes were secured, and the government released emergency stocks and convened national coordination measures. The ACCC urgently authorised major fuel suppliers to coordinate parts of their supply-chain response. Authorities and industry described many regional and rural shortages as a distribution and demand imbalance rather than exhaustion of Australia's total fuel supply: rapid buying emptied some service stations faster than replenishment could reach them. This record is therefore classified as an operational distribution failure, not a physical depot blockade, attack or nationwide absence of fuel.
