Plumpang fuel storage depot — bulk fuel depot fire

3 March 2023

Koja, North Jakarta, Indonesia

What happened

A fire from a fuel pipe followed by an explosion tore through Pertamina's Plumpang depot — Indonesia's most important fuel-storage site, handling about 20% of national supply — around 8pm and spread into the densely built residential area that had encroached to within a meter of the depot fence since the 1990s. Death toll estimates rose over following days from an initial 13-18 to a final confirmed 33 killed and 50 injured; the depot had also suffered a smaller fatal fire in 2009. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
