What happened

A fire broke out on the cellar deck of Chevron subsidiary CABGOC's Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco deepwater platform during a scheduled annual maintenance shutdown. Onsite responders extinguished the blaze and emergency protocols were activated. Seventeen people were initially reported injured, four seriously, and all injured personnel were taken ashore; later reporting confirmed that two workers died from their injuries and that the body of another missing worker was recovered from the water, bringing the death toll to three. Production had been shut since 1 May, before the fire, and CABGOC did not publish a new return-to-service date. Angola's National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels supported the investigation, whose cause remained undetermined in the reviewed reporting.
