What happened
Borr Drilling confirms Prospector 5 sank during jacking/preload operations offshore Gabon. Its 26 October update still lists 110 of 115 personnel safe and five unaccounted for, with marine and air searches continuing and an investigation planned with authorities. This operator count remains distinct from the separately reported fatality below. Reuters separately reports one employee found dead and four still missing, citing three sources familiar with the matter; it says the government had not confirmed the death and still listed five missing. Reuters identifies the reported deceased as an Indian national and the four still missing as three Gabonese nationals and one other expatriate. Offshore magazine attributes the death report to ONEP secretary-general Sylvain Mayabi Binet; that is an attributed union account, not separate government confirmation. The fatality is therefore reported, with search and rescue ongoing, rather than presented as a company-confirmed final toll. A punch-through event during preload is the owner’s preliminary explanation, not a final investigation finding. The reviewed operator statements do not allege hostile fire or an attack. BW Energy and Panoro say MaBoMo production was shut under normal drilling-preparation procedures, with no reported damage or harmful discharge from that facility. That does not establish an environmental all-clear for the sunken rig or quantify accident-caused output loss. The marker is a broad offshore licence reference, not the wreck position. The displayed onset uses the company-reported time converted to UTC+0. Updated on 26 October 2026, 14:45 UTC+0.
