Refinery
Shell Convent refinery — voluntary closure
November 2020
Convent, Louisiana, United States
What happened
After marketing the 211,146 bbl/d Convent refinery for sale from July 2020 without finding a viable buyer, Shell confirmed on 5 November 2020 that it would shut the plant as part of a global strategy to concentrate on fewer, more integrated manufacturing sites for the low-carbon transition. About 698 direct employees and roughly 400 contractors were affected. This was a voluntary commercial closure, not an incident or attack.
