What happened

A fire lasting more than 15 minutes damaged critical power, control and instrumentation cables aboard Excelerate Energy's floating storage and regasification unit at Moheshkhali, forcing the terminal offline. Energy Division and Petrobangla officials said the boilers themselves were not directly damaged, contrary to early descriptions that a boiler had been destroyed, but cabling needed to run boiler motors, burners, transformers, valves, interlocks and emergency-shutdown systems was extensively affected. The outage removed an estimated 450–500 million cubic feet per day from the gas grid: Petrobangla data showed total national supply at 2,151.7 MMcf/d against official demand of 3,854 MMcf/d, with LNG contributing 501.1 MMcf/d. Gas supply to power plants fell to about 700 MMcf/d from 950–1,000, reducing gas-fired generation to about 4,500 MW from a normal 5,500–6,000 MW. Foreign specialists were brought in because suitable replacement cabling was not locally available. QatarEnergy's regional force majeure is not combined with this record: it arose from the wider Middle East conflict and was not caused by the FSRU fire.
