What happened

A low-point drain sheared from a sludge pump while Hibernia personnel prepared to load crude onto a tanker, following excessive vibration, noise and gas detection. About 1,576 liters of crude escaped but was contained within the platform. Operators isolated the pump manually; nobody was injured and no oil reached the sea. C-NLOER classified the event as a major hydrocarbon release with potential for fire, explosion and fatality. The operator's final investigation remained pending.
