Matterhorn platform — riser-guard structural failure

9 April 2026 · 08:00 local time

Mississippi Canyon, Gulf of Mexico, United States

What happened

A riser guard detached from three supports on W&T Energy's Matterhorn tension-leg platform after fatigue cracking developed in the corrosive offshore environment. The protected risers were shut in and all personnel demobilized as a precaution. There were no injuries or pollution; BSEE estimated damage at $2 million. The guard was recovered and gas-pipeline isolation was reversed during work completed through 16 April. The marker is approximate.
