HPCL Visakhapatnam refinery — hydrogen leak fire

19 September 2025

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India

What happened

Hydrogen gas leaked from a transmitter pipe in the new Residue Upgradation Facility unit at HPCL's Visakhapatnam refinery and ignited from static charge. Automatic sprinklers suppressed the fire immediately and fire tenders brought it fully under control within about 30 minutes; no injuries or deaths were reported and thousands of workers were briefly evacuated as a precaution. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
