What happened

Following an operations review, ExxonMobil announced in February 2021 that its 90,000 bbl/d Altona refinery — Australia's smallest — was no longer economically viable, citing competitive product supply, declining domestic crude production and COVID-19 losses. Most refining facilities were shut down by August 2021 and the site was converted into the Mobil Melbourne import terminal. This was a voluntary commercial closure, not an incident or attack.
