What happened

A fire broke out aboard an unnamed 7,000-ton South Korean petroleum-products carrier about 7.4 kilometres north of Jawol Island while it was sailing from Incheon to Ulsan. Two crew members were found in cardiac arrest in the engine room and later died; the other 16 were rescued in stable condition. Coast Guard responders extinguished the fire after about five hours and 22 minutes. Authorities suspected the engine room as the origin, but had not established the cause. The vessel carried about 12,400 kilolitres of petroleum products; the fire did not reach the cargo-storage compartments and no marine pollution was reported.
