Lysychansk refinery — shelling and fire
16 April 2022
Lysychansk, Luhansk region, Ukraine
What happened
Russian forces shelled Ukraine's second-largest oil refinery at Lysychansk, sparking a fire covering about 5,000 square meters; further shelling in May 2022 damaged production areas while persistent artillery fire hindered firefighting. Lysychansk, the last city in Luhansk region to fall, was captured by Russian and Luhansk militia forces in early July 2022 after a prolonged battle — the refinery was under Ukrainian government control at the time of this strike but has since been in Russian-occupied territory.
