Fuel Retail Station
Gas station explosion, Makhachkala
14 August 2023
Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia
What happened
A fire that started at an adjacent vehicle-repair shop spread to a Makhachkala petrol station, igniting two of its eight external fuel tanks in a major explosion; officials later said 90–100 tonnes of illegally stored ammonium nitrate across the street also detonated in the fire. At least 35 people were killed and roughly 80 injured, many with severe burns, and dozens of nearby buildings were damaged. This was an accidental industrial-safety failure, not an attack, and carries no Ukraine attribution.
