What happened

A military-escorted fuel convoy travelling on Route Nationale 1 toward Kayes was ambushed, with Reuters reporting at least 40 fuel tankers burned; other outlets cited higher tolls of 80 or more tankers hit. Malian officials reported several soldiers and attackers killed in the fighting. The attack followed JNIM's August 2025 announcement of a blockade on Kayes and Nioro du Sahel and a ban on fuel imports from Senegal, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Mauritania, and marked an escalation of the group's campaign to cut off fuel supplies to Bamako.
