Algoa Bay oil spill — suspected MSC Apollo source

7 September 2024

Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa

What happened

Oil-like blobs and a sheen were reported near the Algoa Bay anchorage and confirmed by a response craft. SAMSA said the spill was believed to have originated from the container ship MSC Apollo, but the vessel attribution remained under investigation. Six oiled African penguins were captured for treatment and two others initially evaded capture. Authorities later reported the spill contained and cleaned, with no further residue or affected wildlife found. The quantity released was not published.
