Galp Matosinhos refinery — voluntary closure

2021

Matosinhos, Portugal

What happened

Galp discontinued refining at its 110,000 bbl/d Matosinhos plant from 2021, consolidating Portuguese refining at its larger, deep-conversion Sines site (220,000 bbl/d) amid structural demand shifts, European regulation and COVID-19 effects. The closure eliminated about 400 direct jobs and roughly 1,000 indirect roles; the Matosinhos site is being dismantled and redeveloped. This was a voluntary commercial closure, not an incident or attack.
